Use AI-powered transforms like Summarize, Rewrite, and Translate.

What is BYOK?

BYOK = Bring Your Own Key

You provide your own API key from OpenAI or Anthropic. This means:

  • You control costs - Pay the AI company directly
  • Your data stays yours - Tessel never sees your text
  • No extra fees - Just the AI provider's charges

Choose a Provider

Provider Best For Cost
OpenAI Fast responses, popular choice ~$0.15 per 1000 transforms
Anthropic Long text, detailed analysis ~$0.25 per 1000 transforms

Costs depend on text length. These are estimates using the cheapest models.

Quick Setup

1. Get an API Key

Pick one:

2. Add Key to Tessel

  1. Open Tessel
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Find AI Configuration
  4. Click Add API Key
  5. Pick your provider (OpenAI or Anthropic)
  6. Paste your key
  7. Click Save

3. Test It

Click Test Connection. If it says "Connected", you're good!

4. Try an AI Transform

  1. Copy some text
  2. Use an AI transform shortcut (like AI Summarize)
  3. Check the result

How Much Does It Cost?

Tessel doesn't charge anything for AI transforms. You pay the AI company directly.

Most people spend $1-5/month on AI transforms.

Where is My Key Stored?

Your API key is stored securely in your computer's keychain:

  • Mac: Keychain Access
  • Windows: Credential Manager
  • Linux: Secret Service

Tessel never sends your key anywhere except to the AI provider.

Remove Your Key

Want to disconnect AI?

  1. Open Tessel Settings
  2. Find AI Configuration
  3. Click the trash icon next to your key
  4. Confirm

The key is permanently deleted.

Tips

  • Start with the cheapest model - GPT-4o-mini or Claude 3 Haiku
  • Set a spending limit in your AI provider dashboard
  • Monitor usage to avoid surprises
